How do you build your stable of breeders?

I'm gonna try my hand at breeding & start saving or doing payment plans with rep. Breeders. How did you guys or girls start collecting your breeders? And if you get all of your breeders from one breeder is that kinda like franchising lol? I would rather pick from a few different breeders & go from there

Don't go for the cheapest animal you can find, go for the best looking animals! You might end up paying a little extra, but the animals you produce will look a heck of a lot better. What goes in is generally what comes out...

Yeah I wouldn't go in cheap, that's why I said I may have to do payment plans or old fashion saving. Just kinda think if you get all your balls from one breeder your just franchising. I might do three or four different breeders, maybe just for my ego lol

You can usually find nice subadult females for just a little more than babies. I bought a 700gm fire female for around $500. A few months later she is pushing 1000gms....

hold back all the girls you produce.....

Re: How do you build your stable of breeders?

I only purchase quality females and males from people i trust. Other than that I make sure to have atleast 5-10 females per a male at the least every year. I usually purchase 4-8 males every year and those males are what are I will be breeding to my females from previous years that were held back. I just keep going like that and also every year I get 2-10 females so I always have new blood to work with. Some females purchased are normals and some are morphs it all depends on my plans for that year. This year I purchased 36 females and only 2 were morphs but I also have a few males that are not proven out so all those nice normal females will be very helpful. Well that is what I do. Sorry for the lack of order in the reply but I am half asleep.

Re: How do you build your stable of breeders?

Look for the best examples of the morphs. Like the good advice above, it'll cost you a bit more but in the end they all cost the same to feed and you'll be a step ahead of the people who are breeding the "cheap" examples.

Check sellers' histories on the BOI, and choose trustworthy, honest folks to do business with.

I also like to look for the best quality in each morph I plan on getting.. It is definitely worth the extra $$.

What I would do, though, is not go out and buy every morph you see. Plan it first so you don't get overwhelmed! Look around and look for those animals that make you go WOW. And if you cannot afford to buy that animal, get the ingedients. You won't regret going that way.

Re: How do you build your stable of breeders?

my advice would be pick up a few starter female morphs that when you get a male, he will be a good choice for all your females. get the male the following year if your females are feeding well and putting on some good size. breed them, hopefully you produce some females that are worthy to hold back and possible double gene females. you then can sell or trade the others for morphs that you want. you want a good selection of females in your collection up to breeding size, so when a new morph comes along, you have the females to support that new male.

It's kind of funny how a breeder's collection can grow to be worth more than their house!!

I'm not there yet, but each year the gap gets smaller!!!

I'm not breeding yet! But, I've started getting my females! I've picked the morphs I like and got them. I got a Black Pastel, Lesser and Mojave female. I'm looking at possilbe males for some special projects. Thinking about picking up a male Mojave for the Black Pastel and Lesser. Maybe for the Mojave as well. But, thinking about a Majestic for the Mojo. Get what YOU want and what YOU like. Then go from there!!!! Good luck!
