Thanks for your response and link! Seems that the lip is pretty small. Is it big enough to hold sturdy on the rail?

Just make sure that you build your rack so that there isn't much room on either side of the tub when you slide it in and out. The tubs will be fine. A lot of people use Petmate litter pans for breeding rodents. If you wonder how well they will hold just go to youtube and look up Ralph Davis rat barn. You will see how they hold LOL.
