So pastel hypos are just brighter than average hypos? Or is there an actual pastel gene.

if it were truly codominant, it would be (on average) passed on to half of the offspring. in reality, if you put a really pretty pastel with a really ugly normal, more than likely VERY few - if any - of the offspring will fit the "pastel" definition. if you put two really pretty pastels together, most of the offspring could be considered "pastel".
