    very unusual behavior

My six month old male normal is laying under the newpaper in his enclosure. I just recently gave him a new hide from Reptile Basics and he was using it except for today when I went to check on him and found him laying under the newspaper. Is this normal or does this mean he does not like his new hide? I had to get him a new one because he was busting out of the sides and wearing his little cave like a hat, lol.

I think it's pretty normal. I often find my snakes hiding under their water dishes despite providing them with hides that seem ideal to me. Maybe your snake prefers the temperature in the spot where it's hiding under the newspaper. Maybe try putting the over that spot and see if your snake will use it.

It most likely just means he likes the temperature there more, and is completely normal. This is why many people put identical hides on each side, one cool and one warm, so they have the same comfort but a choice of temperature.

I wouldn't worry at all, completely normal behavior.

    Re: very unusual behavior

No worries... My BP will sometimes do that if he finds an opening in the newspaper and my garter does the same thing. I think since burrowing is in their nature, but since we don't provide them with burrowing material (newspaper really isn't suitable for digging and burrowing), if they can sometimes find an opening in the newspaper and use that to burrow in. I wouldn't stress, he's just getting comfy. I think it might be similar to humans curling up into warm blankets lol

It is normal imo and I would only be concerned if he was eating good and then stopped.

I would agree with this statement. As long as temps and humidity are fine, as well as his feeding going well, I wouldn't think twice about it.

Kinda of a quick scare though when you don't notice them under there and just see an empty tub with no snake in the hide!
