    organizing / nomenclature

    I have a question for the next breeding season. I have taken over a dinker project from an ailing friend. I am not breeding anything this year but am planning to next.

    My question is how do you name parents and offspring? The system I have 'inherited' is confusing and complex and I am planning on starting fresh and am hoping for suggestions or ideas of how.

    What kind of system have you inherited? It would be much easier for us to help you if you gave an example.

    That is part of the problem I don't understand the system at all.

    RPFN_10_12_10 (male chocolate ball)
    F16_22_116_21 (female pastel)

    Are the names offspring are totally different again.

    I am used to organizing huge amounts of files, and before I started from scratch on my own I thought I'd ask to see what systems were being used at this time.

    I figured I'd rename snakes (they have names but that will get numbers for ease of tracking) especially when it comes to breeding.

    I had been thinking CHOC_M_01
    CHOC = Chocolate
    M = Male
    01= individual animal

    PSTL_F_02
    PSTL = Pastel
    F= female
    02 individual animal I figured to start at 01 and just go numeric and ignore morphs I have no plans on doing this large scale I am finishing a project!

    I figured offspring might be

    CO/PL_F_01/02_10

    CO/PL = Chocolate Pastel
    F = Female
    01/02 = parents ids
    10= individual id

    Is this a logical system? Or is it clunky?successful

    This is how I do it.

    The year born along with the sex of the animal. Then it's morph name. Then it's individual number.

    Here's some of my animals numbers..

    03F-NORM-01
    10F-PSTL-01
    10F-PIED-01

    For a het, I just do something like this...

    10F-LSSRPHH-01 (Lesser Possible Het Hypo)
    03F-PHCA-01 (Normal Possible Het Caramal Albino)

    etc...

    Hmm I've been thinking about this also. It would be nice if everyone used some kind of standard system.

    It'll never happen, lol

    I use a google doc to keep track of clutches. Each animal gets an ID # w/sex, such as M1, M2, F1, F2, etc.

    So I essentially ID the 3rd male I pop from the 2nd clutch to hatch this year as:

    M3 from 2010 clutch #2

    Each clutch has its own document to track feed records, morph info, and anything else of each animal.

    The first thing listed is the parents of the clutch. It might not work as well if you have multiple sire clutches.

    A big mistake people make especially with combo morphs is trying to incorporate morph information into a hatchling's designation. This is what creates messy and difficult-to-read systems. Less information in nomenclature is better.

    Re: organizing / nomenclature

    My system rocks..... I name my animals and use their name.... then again I have less than 25 so its relatively easy that way

    My numbers are:
    YB-M-10-01
    YB = Yellow belly
    M= male
    10= year of hatch
    01= 1 st yellow belly in collection
    Mine all have names also but I use their number for tracking. You could alway go to I-herp and see how some pepole have their numbers listed also.

    10Enchi_m_#1 or 08Bee_f_#2 no guessing there

    for het's or codom hets I do this

    10Mojo_Het:hypo_f_#2 or 08_pHet:snow_f_#1

    so its

    YEAR|MORPH_HET (if needed)_SEX_number produced that year.

    Sire and Dame go on their record card.

    Re: organizing / nomenclature

    We do it a little differently.

    For our breeder animals we acquire we just give them a name and a # and list the morph. Since we aren't selling them any time soon.

    Like: Spaz-M1-Pastel

    The babies we produce are labeled as such:

    C4-10-F1-FR (Clutch 4 - 2010 - Female 1 - Fire)

    This way there is a direct link in their label to their clutch # (and parentage).

    For possible hets it would look like this: C1-10-F1-50%PHPIED
