got bit for the first time
yesterday was feeding day and i was feeding my new female a f/t rat. couldnt find my tongs so i figgered i could pull it off doing the dead rat dance by hand. well i was wrong she missed the rat and got my hand then constricted around my wrist. it took like 5 minutes to get her off. it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be but i need to find my tongs before next week

Re: got bit for the first time
I haven't been bit yet, but after hearing the stories I am a lot more nervous about being bit by a rat than my snake.

Re: got bit for the first time
Ouch! Definitely something to make sure to avoid in the future. Tongs are invaluable
It's always interesting to hear people's bite stories and their reactions, though. I've been bitten twice by my little guy in my 9 months of ownership... but the first time was after I was taking him to the vet to be checked out, and he managed to get loose and crawl underneath one of the panels in my car and get INSIDE THE FIREWALL between the cockpit and engine bay. I was terrified he'd get hurt, so I picked up a frozen rat from the pet store nearby and set it on the floorboard to lure him out -- he was really confused by a half-frozen meal, though, and he was stressed from me trying to pull him out previously, so he kept striking at it and retracting.
Once he had come out enough, I grabbed him around his body (gently, but firmly) so that I could try to pull him loose from the car, and I guess he wasn't sure if I was food since I was warm (or maybe he was just mad/stressed!) and he turned around and tagged me, but he immediately let go. It stings like hell for a short bit, and it bled like crazy, but it's really not that bad at all.
The second bite was simply me not being careful and washing my hands like I should; unfortunately, that time he didn't let go, so I had to keep him from wrapping my arm and I had to pry his jaws off my finger. He was determined!

I'll tell you, it's almost nice when it happens just because you have an idea of what to expect in the future! Don't worry though... own 'em long enough and I'm sure you'll get bitten eventually. It's nothing dreadful, for sure. :)
