Re: Idiot rednecks kill python that wasn't even bothering anyone

I believe what needs to be eradicated is the irresponsible pet owners that get these animals... I own a pet shop.... have a burm for sell.... refused to sell it 5 times this week, will find someone capable of taking care of it and responsible enough to care for it. I cannot make every one else feel the way that I do, but we are in a way responsible for the animals we sell. We may not eradicate the wild population, but we have to eradicate the bad publicity, or we will all lose in the end

Once people start to understand that it really isn't up to us as human beings to control mother nature we will all be better off.

For millions of years animals have been taking care of themselves. A natural balance is always reached in some way or fashion. The ecosystems where these pythons have been introduced will be changed, but they will not be destroyed. They will just be different.

I personally don't see the big deal. Are pythons really any more dangerous than alligators? People are taking this media "spark" and turning it into a wild fire.
what about the wild turkeys? with out human intervention, there would be none. its possible to kill the wild population, just give it time

Once again it shold be up to Mother nature not us as humans, After all this Planet has been through over millions of years and it seems to take care of itself, We come in as humans and have damn near destroyed it in just a few 1000 years....yea us, then we go off and kll another creature b/c we say it doesn't belong there. Technically, we dont belong, we just put ourselves there.

Are there any links to watch Python Hunters online or download it? I don't think I have Nat Geo Wild.

This makes me really glad to read. Personally (and I know this isn't a popular stance), but I think there needs to be a little more regulation on large constrictors. I dont think there should be a ban, but a permit should definitely be enforced in much the same way venomous permits are handled in Florida. It really bothered me that at the last reptile show I went to, I purchased a juvenile green anaconda, and wasn't asked a single question as to whether or not I know what I'm doing and what I'm getting into. A lot of shops/breeders are just happy to offload their stock regardless of who it's to. I think it's been proven time and time again that there are just too many irresponsible people who want to play the reptile game, and get these animals ignorantly. Now someone needs to step in and be the referee because this no-rules, free for all doesn't seem to be working itself out.

Regardless of how wide spread of a problem burms are/aren't in Florida, invasive non-native species are never a good thing to any ecosystem.

Something like that happened to me at a show this year. A dealer was trying to sell me a anny. Didn't ask me about what I owned or how experienced I was. All he was really talking about was how good a deal it was and that not many other dealers were selling them. I told him I was a BP guy and didn't have the experience or desire to own an anny. It was funny the guy sounded like a sleezy used car salesman.

jjmitchell thank you for your concern! All too often store (not only pets but across the board) are interested in the sale and not if it is the appropriate thing for that client. I go to the breeder and supplies I do because they do ask. If sellers were all as responsible we would have fewer problems.

Re: Idiot rednecks kill python that wasn't even bothering anyone

u'd think ppl would come up with a away to catch them and either ship them back to where they came from or put them in zoo's to educat some of the idiot ppl about what happens to them.there is always the possibility the wild snakes could be rehabilitated and sold to breeders...well the ones who r willing to take on the challange and possibly find new thing with the wild snakes. there is so many snakes realesed that there could be new morphs or hybirds no one has ever seen before
