    new vet, got a ?

ok so the big female we got had an RI. long story on how we got her and we moved so it delayed a vet visit. she got better due to husbandry but wasnt completely better so we went to the vet today. heres what the receipt says.

    Baytril---$27.29
    Exam----$63.70
    Biohazard Waste management---4.99
    Aerobic C & S-M020---$170.00
    Lab Test---30.00
    TOTAL---296.83

OK. so the baytril is for now until the lab results come back.
    exam is self explanatory.
biohazard is for i guess the needle i used to give her a shot in the office.
    lab test is self explanatory
but is Aerobic C & S the tracheal wash i asked her to do in order to get good labs done? a bill that big kinda threw me off at checkout time.
A room full of empty racks and thermostats that have been unplugged.

Wow that is a lot for tracheal wash if that's what it is. I have to go to the vet Friday with one of my snakes for the same problem and I'm hoping it won't be that much! lol

I took Charlie in for his RI and total bill was $52.60.
$30 for vet visit and the rest for baytril. Though we didn't have cultures done, it was pretty obvious.

Aerobic C&S is the actual test.

Bacterial isolation/ID and 16 antibiotic sensitivities for all known pathogens, plus your choice of gram stain OR fungal culture.

Still, much more expensive than I would expect.

    Good Luck!

I've never had any vet bill that was that expensive at one time... you should ask what it was for.

IMO you just wasted $52.60 because without a culture and swab, Baytril very likely prove as effective for treating the bacteria your snake has as injecting your snake with Bud Light AND the time you've wasted will likely worsen the R.I. which could cause death.

And this is your diagnosis from how far away? Where did you graduate and receive your DMV? Sorry, but I hate when the average Joe feels they know more than a DMV.

Well with an obvious RI (wheezing, clicking and mucus in his throat) my vet felt a swab was unnecessary. In fact, we finished his rounds of shots on Monday and are already noticing great improvement. His mucus was gone in 2 days, the clicking and wheezing have lessened to the point where it only happens occasionally and he's much more active now.
