The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is....
....Tattooed people don't care if you're not tattooed.

I swear that is just about what you have to do. Its crazy right now and crime seems to be on the rise everywhere including here. We live in a fairly affluent neighborhood and still have some crazy things going on here. Mostly it is stupid kid stuff.....or illegals...but we did have a murder/suicide about a mile away. My hubby fully believes in stocking the house with firearms in case anyone breaks in... ....(personally, I think its a military thing), as we have our alarm system and dogs as well.

Re: shooting on my block
Sadly ... though Im not proud of it ....shootings around where Im from are common ... I had a man shoot up a police vehicle from my front lawn at 3am one morning and the worse part was I heard about 8 shots woke up said"wow that sounded closer than usual" then went back to sleep. Crime is EVERYWHERE its just getting ridiculous now a days. My wife has witnessed 2 shootings, we have seen multiple drug busts. Its a shame, I moved out of the neighborhood a little over a year ago but I work there still and my family still lives there. In the past 3 years or so Phila Police officers have been brutally killed. I will tell you one thing it does make me second guess bringing a child into this screwed up world.

Re: shooting on my block
Your husband is a very smart man. Your alarm system can be disabled by simply cutting your phone line. Your dogs can be taken out of the picture with poisoned food. But nothing sends a chill up the spine of a perp like hearing a pump shotgun racked and hearing someone say, "Move an inch and you're dead."
The wife and I have a 2 prong approach to a home invasion. If at night, first we call 911, she stays in the bedroom on th phone with 911 operator along with a 12 guage pump shotgun. I go out into the hallway with a Sig P220R with a laser and an extra mag. I make my way towards the kids bedrooms. I take a position that will allow me to protect their bedrooms. We have a light switch that is close by that turns on the lights in the dining room (central room to the house), that goes on. At this time, it's party time. The perp gets no second chances. He (they) either leave, surrender or dies.
If during the day, we have a secret word we use when if we feel we are being violated. If either of us hear this word, it's no joking around. We know it's not a joke and we go to a defcon 1 conditioin. As an example, if I'm watching TV and she's in the kitchen or other part of the house and she sees a perp somewhere outside. She yells our secret word. The kids know where to go, the wife heads to a predetermined location with a cell phone. I head to one of my firearms and we are prepared for anything that could happen.
I know this sounds crazy and paranoid, but IF something were to happen, we would be prepared. I'm also the kind of guy that hold fire drills in my home. Any time of the day or night, the family could be awakened to with a smoke alarm alerting the family to a fire.
I know, I know. It sounds weird and for most people it probably is. But I'm a real alpha person and I want to know that my family is prepared for almost any condition that could cause them bodily harm.
My kids are into preparation as I am, my 2 oldest son's have completed a course on Krav Maga. That's an Israeli close combat martial art. They did it on their own. Daddy was never so proud.
I'll stop now. I wish everyone would prepare themselves and their families for unconventional situations. As stated in this thread, crime is everywhere. I want my family to be survivors instead of victims.

But that's the only way this world will be brought back into balance. If there's no one but bad guys around, who wins. You've got to keep fighting for what is right. If not, they win.

It's sad, but it is everywhere. Where I live, we hear about a shooting almost nightly on the news. There was a stabbing in the neighborhood right beside my old elementary school a few years ago. It is a scary world, but that shouldn't stop anyone from having children.
My sister in law refuses to have kids because she "doesn't want to bring up a child in a world like this." The way I see it. If you can't pass down your values to your children, the bad guys win.

You don't have to move to Montana, just move somewhere either affluent or where your nearest neighbor's property is a few football fields away.
You'd be surprised how close such places can be to a metropolis.

Not true any longer. Look at the Amish school shooting in Lancaster County PA. The affluent neighborhood isn't spared criminal activity either. Look at Montgomery County, Maryland. Ranked as one of the highest salaried counties in the US, and crime is rampant. The only commuity I know that has no crime is Gibson Island in Maryland. It is a gated community on an island. Drive over a bridege, then your greeted by the gate. Can't get in other than by boat. Now they do have some petty theft and every now and then a boat theft, some of which are worth more than my house.
Crime is everywhere. If there are people, there are crimes. How serious of a crime, that's up for debate, but there is crime everywhere.
