You could try putting him with a female you know is locking, and watch him. If he courts her, you know he's fine, and you can remove him before he breeds your 'test female'.
Another trick--put the freshly shed skin of a female who IS locking in with your females who are not. It might spur the male to court them. It's worked for me at least once.
