Other pythons as laid back as a Ball?

Hi there. I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me.

My family as owned a ball python for about 5 years now, and It has been in my sole possession now since June. Since then I've been taking it really seriously (much more than my father did ).

I have looked into owning another snake, and am really interested in other pythons. As a newer snake handler, however, I am concerned with how aggressive other snakes may be. Something tells I wouldn't be able to tame a snake myself. I'm intimidated by my ball sometimes, even though he's only hissed at me a few times, and never even come close to striking.

Are other pythons pretty chill? Would raising a snake from a very young age help at all?

Hi, welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your first BP. All I have experience with are bps and Boas. Boas are great aswell and with handling They are VERY docile. Getting one as a baby will definitely help. Just have to Handel them. I have 5 Boas and 2 ball pythons and have yet to been bitten :-) goodluck on your decision. O yea and post some pics. of your BP when you get a chance. We LOVE pictures

Alot of Burmese are as calm as the ball but as a new handler i would not recommend a burm at all they are a 2 person snake due to their size. A corn snake is pretty small and they remind me of noodles there so small as a baby lol. Being a new handler a adult snake can be intimadating so start off with a baby that way you can get to learn the snake as a little fellow. And a baby ball in my opinion is a good place to start if you want to own a python. And like stated boas are good to but just keep in mind with a boa you could end up with a big snake! The redtails boas ive owned are a little more tempermental than the ball pythons but other wise pretty docile. the most docile boa ive owned would have been the dumerials ground boa.

I have a pair of Spotted Pythons and a pair of Stimson's Pythons... and all except the youngest (female Stimson's) are SUPER mellow! Even the skittish young girl is nice, just not quite to the mellow adult stage yet. James the male Stimson's is probably the sweetest, and so calm you can actually pet his head. They also stay nice and small, usually no more than 4-4.5ft tops. Check 'em out, they're great snakes!!

P.S. I just started pairing my Spotteds, and one of my friends with 2 young kids is interested in adopting a baby... he held the boy, Johnny, and immediately said "now this would be a great snake for my kids."

mainland retics are as calm if not calmer then a ball python haha but thats not a single person snake

in all honesty if your ball python scares you when it hisses id just get a baby ball and goo from there, i can suggest all kindsa snakes iv read on handled and delt with but all of them have their bad scale days just like we do.

carpet pythons are calm after a year, a hog island boa would be a good choice, a smaller boa that maby gets 5-6 feet and is docile. what are you looking for in a snake? maby that could help me and other memebers better suggest options for you to look in to

Corn snakes are colubrids, not pythons, but they are really sweet too.
I've heard good things about the other python subspecies mentioned also.

Any of the antaresias - spotteds, childrens, stimsons and anthills.

Woma pythons are - for the most part - very easy going also.

Once savu pythons hit adulthood, they are also fairly mellow snakes.

Well, they aren't ball pythons but Dumeril's boas can be fantastic snakes. Mine hasn't ever so much as hissed at me and a friend of mine who has managed/owned a reptile store for over 30 years said they are about the only non-venomous snake that has never bitten him.
