IMO your best bet might be to start with an adult female Grammostola rosea. Get one from a breeder that can tell you about her. Tell the breeder you want a super docile one. If you can pick it up in person then that is even better because you can interact with it at that time. See how she acts and see how you feel about the commitment. Most tarantula's have mood swings after molts (if they have any at all) and an adult female will not be molting often and has been around long enough that the breeder can tell you a whole lot about her. After a molt some nice ones can turn psycho and some psycho can calm down. Some always stay the same be it nice or psycho. Nice tarantula's like any other animals can have off days too. Good luck with your descision

It is not an ignorant question at all. Yes, all tarantulas are venomous. Some tarantula's have a more potent venom then other's. Old world tarantula's have a more potent venom then new world tarantula's. Poecilotheria tarantula's for example have REALLY potent venom.

but i guess the venom isn't strong enough to do much? like if it bit you while you were handling it?

I started a new thread on this subject and answered you there so we do not keep hijacking the OP's thread

Brazilian blacks are fair decent beginners as well, because they're closely related to the Chilean Rosehairs. I would also say that the Mexican Redknee (brachypelma smithi) is a pretty good starter too, but can be a bit more pricey if you're getting them at a pet store, because they aren't allowed to catch them in the wild anymore (Personally, I'd be willing to pay the extra because of that). The redknees are like the "classic" tarantula, and they're generally very docile as well.
As Boanerges said, you'll probably going to want to go for an older tarantula, and porbably from a breeder as well, because they'll tend to be more established and calmer, and breeders are a lot more knowledgeable than pet store employees.

I read up on the Poe's, and watched a video of a guy describing his very recent bite from a 10" female. Bleeding fang marks an inch apart, his arm was like a steel pipe, and he was facing weeks of cramps and generally sucky experiences.
NO
THANK
YOU

Yeah, I would definitely pass on that experience myself too

The effect of the venom also depends on if your allergic to stinging insects. Some people who allergic to bee venom (like me) will also be allergic to tarantula venom. That's why I'm more of a look but don't touch kinda guy. Also b. Smithi's are good beginner species but they tend to be hair kickers. I've owned 2 & as soon as I would open the lid to their tank there would be a shower of hairs.
