    New Rescued BP!

I just rescued a Ball Python tonight and feel great. I understand how some people don't understand the care or get a snake bestowed upon them due to an emergency. This particular one was on craigslist and from the pictures i knew it was a very nice looking snake. Not only that but i also noticed the lack of a hide, 1 small heat lamp, a dry water bowl, and a gigantic screen lid. Filled with Aspen the 30 Gallon tank is a terrible tank for this animal.

So now the Guy/Girl resides in a Model #221 Vision cage with 2 RBI Hides and temps have been waiting for a new arrival for about 5 days. He/She immediately went into the hide and i have her as far as my other snakes as possible, which just happens to be a PITCH BLACK room. I feel i will let him chill out for about 2 weeks before doing anything as he has been moved 4 times in 2 weeks.

All i have to say is the feeling you get rescuing a snake is a great feeling. Although it looks like this one was either burned or chewed on by a rat towards the tail, but some good sheds will help that a lot. The colors as amazing for a normal and i think he/she will be a nice addition, especially for the lighter colors in future projects. My eyes might fool me, but it looks like there is some paradox on the lower half, i don't know.

If anyone else has some rescue stories, i'd love to hear them as this is my 2nd one. Most people just consider it a purchase, but to me, its a rescue!

    Beautiful snake.
Please update after a couple good sheds. That snake doesn't know how lucky she/he is

I used to rescue snakes, one of them was a 4500 gr !!!! Ball Python female. Kept in a cold 10 gallon tank with an empty water dish. She had a really bad RI, boy, the noises that came out of her !!!!

With the help of a great vet I got her healthy again and she dropped 6 huge eggs, which was a big surprise. One egg went bad, the other 5 had huge hatchlings inside. They ranged from 89 gr. to 112 gr. out of the egg.

Also rescued a male that had really light colors , very desertish looking. He had internal parasites as well as an RI. Had to be treated with shots as well as oral meds. He was really difficult to get feeding regularly, but eventually he did and found a good home.

Rescuing is very rewarding, the only thing I would caution about is a good quarantine protocol. Seems like you got that covered

    Re: New Rescued BP!

I am about to rescue a big normal this weekend. I don't know if it is a male or female at this point. I saw it on craigslist. They had a picture of the setup and it is just all wrong. They said this snake is a little on the aggressive side, always striking and that is why they want it gone. I believe that every animal deserves a second chance. I have had the enclosure set up for a little over a week getting temps and everything right where it needs to be.

I think it is awesome that there are people that are so passionate about snakes they are willing to drop everything to rescue and rehabilitate them. They are incredible creatures, I've had mine for just a few days and he amazes me every time I look in on him. Good for you for rescuing snakes obviously in need of a good home! Keep us updated!

I actually volenteer with a reptile rescue organization I have currently 2 very very very small balls that were dropped off at a spca we get them as the spca in our area are not equiped to handle reptiles. I don't have any information on where they came from at least no RI but they had TICKS, I mean like regular deer ticks huge things and really bad eye caps. I have got all the ticks gone (I hope) and the eye caps resolved, switched from live mice to F/T rats and feeding well. The orginal plan was to foster them until they were healthy and feeding well and find a new permant home but I named them... and they are really lovely personalities so I guess they are mine now. Orphelia (when soaking she would duck her head under for so long I lifted it out then she would do so again) and Legion.

Good Job Steveboos! that really is a great looking 'guy' That looks like a burn scar to me, I really wish that people would do a bit of research BEFORE buying an animal maybe so many would not need to be rescued!

    Re: New Rescued BP!

looks at the snake list and thinsk about why the numbers are so high and they are mostly rescued snakes( non morphs.)

I got one girl that was rescued, the guy I met when looking for more rodent tanks cause I was breeding more than I needed at the time. any how the guy contacts me a few days befoer xmas and wants to know if i take the bp he was keeping it in a tank with a live gerbil trying to get it ti eat had quit ( already had one died) well the guy meets me at the local gas station xmas eve it freezing cold outside ( the point water turns to ice really fast) and her the guy sitting here in the truck with the windows wide open no heat going and cripping cause it took me 10 mintues to get there( when I told him it take me about 15 to get there) hands me the snake in a box and leaves. At this point i thinking oh great I going t open this box find a frozen snake that dead. I get a semi frozen snake. I quicky decide to place the snake under my coatand shirt so to watm up quicky as possible. (my truck heater going full blast since i left home, I am sweating like it middle of july and I wearing long cloths pushing a mower.)
WEll I get pulled over cause speeding alittle wanting to get the snake home. As the cop giving me the riot act about speeding the snake happens to pop it head out of my coat as she trying to wrap on my neck for a hot spot. I am laugihng cause it titckles and the cop takes one look and I spend 10 mintues explaining it all the cop write my number down and lets me go saying He keep me in mind.
In the last 3 years around xmas time I seem to get at least 1 rescue lol..

    Re: New Rescued BP!

Great rescue/story! It's always nice to see these poor animals end up in great homes! You did a great thing!

Last February I rescued a 5'-6", 15 year old, male BP (although I was told it was a female and previously laid eggs). I could tell it was in terrible conditions from the photos posted, so i made the 1 1/2 hour drive (each way) to go get "her". When i get there it was worse than i expected. She was WAY under weight and had stuck shed and rat bites all over her.

After I removed her from the nightmare, I got her home and did a once over and checked her weight...she weighed in at 1800 grams and was almost 66" long!

Now HE is coming up on a year with us and is over 3200 grams and still on the lean side! All stuck shed and eye caps came off with his first shed with us and the rat bites are barely visible! This snake is also our friendliest and most outgoing by far! It's almost like he is showing his appreciation for us rescuing him!
