    Tubs & temps

    Hey everyone,

I switched to a tub setup and I have a digital thermometer with the probe on the UTH and it is reading 84..2. I have my accurite probe inside under the paper towels laying against the tub ( inside of the hide ) and it is reading 101.3

I have the UTH plugged into a Rheostat and it is turned all the way down. I have about 1" clearance under the tub, so heat doesn't build up.

Why are my readings so far off and which one should I trust. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

    A couple of things.

First you need to figure out if both the accurite and the thermometer are correctly calibrated. Invest in an inexpensive heat gun to act as a tie-breaker.

Second, the fact that you have the rheostat turned all the way down would lead me to believe that thermometer atop the UTH is probably correct - but who knows.

It is not uncommon to get a higher reading under substrate or under paper towels compared to the pad itself as those items often insulate or trap heat, creating a more intense hot spot.

Try this little experiment: once you get a heat gun, cover part of the hot spot with substrate and leave the other half uncovered. Then shoot the surface of the UTH and the covered and uncovered tub locations. You should find one considerably hotter than the other. If you have good air flow around the UTH, you might even find the covered portion of the tub hotter than the UTH.

Get a 20% off coupon, or not.

Then pick a store and find a temp gun.

    They are cheap this week.

    9$.

I have one what I purhcased from a herp site, that said it was better, but they are the same thing. almost exact.
