Don't confuse 'big' with 'fat and lazy'.
5 foot plus males shouldn't weigh 1000 grams! They're going to be much heavier at that length. Make sure their weight is appropriate for their size, and they'll breed just fine. Older males can be rock stars during the breeding season. So many people breed young males because they can, not because they breed better than older animals.
I see no reason not to put a big veteran breeder male with a first-time 1500 gram girl.
