They're a bit 'played out' IMO from over-popularity in poor quality pet shops during the '90s, but emperor scorpions really are a fairly decent scorpion, plus there is more wealth of knowledge on keeping this species than just about any other scorpion.

Tarantulas are outside my scope of experience however.

I agree with mainbutter.....emperor scorp is the way to go as far as scorps are concerned...mine is hand tame and spoiled to a point where i have to feed him crickets with tongs lol

spider wise....i'd say hands down, the Chilean rose hair is a great starter.....they are one of the less aggressive species, easily handled, i use mine in the school presentations i do, she's never been the least bit on the shy side & has even learned to give high 5's (yes, very weird, i know)...

I would agree that an emp is a good starter scorpion and a rose hair is a good starter T. A rose hair was my first tarantula. You just need to be careful getting your first rose hair because I have seen A LOT of psycho rosies. Just make sure you pick up a nice calm and docile one and I bet you will not regret it If a rosie is not your thing a few others come to mind (but some are slow growers and/or hair kickers):

Grammostola pulchra
Brachypelma smithi
Brachypelma emilia
Brachypelma albopilosum
Avicularia avicularia (if you want an aboreal)

Depends on what one bit you. It is said if your allergic to bee stings there is a very good chance you could be allergic to a tarantula bite and that would not be good. Old world tarantula's are the one's said to have medically significant venom as opposed to New World tarantulas.

if you're getting one of the terrestrial species, you'll want maybe a 5 gal tank that's long and not very high. For an arborial species you'll want a taller tank with more wall space for them to climb.

Depends on the size of the tarantula. But various size deli cups, Kritter keepers, fish tanks, steralite tubs, glad ware style containers etc.
