Trust me, taping probe with aluminum tape TO the heat pad is how you want to do it. I use to run my probe in the tank and my temp would fluctuate all over the place, running anywhere from 80-105! As soon as I took someone's advice and taped it to the pad, my problems were solved. Now my temps only chance a degree or so always staying 90-91.

And as far as running two cages off of one thermostat? Like everyone has already stated, YES you can. I actually run 3 tubs off of one thermostat and it works perfectly that way.
