Help Spreading the Truth.
Hey Everybody,
I'm a high school guy involved in public speaking, and I want to write a speech about our concerns. I know there is a lot of misconceptions about pythons, which has lead to lots of people wanting to get them banned from private ownership. So, I have decided to write a speech in their defense.
This is where yall come in, I hope that someone here who knows more than me might be able to think of some useful info that I could use in my speech.
I was thinking my first point should be showing that pet pythons aren't any more dangerous than a dog, and that the opposite is actually true.
Then for my second point I was wanting to say that they aren't as big an environmental threat as the media would have us believe. I already know about the Barkers stuff, but is there any other places that say things to this affect?
For my third point I want to show how this matters to the average person. I'm sure they'll all be glad to know that statistically there isn't much chance of them getting killed by a constrictor, but really it doesn't affect them much. In my years of speech and debate if there is one thing I learned it's that if you want to reach people then you have to make it matter to them. My thought was to try and show that if snakes are banned then it could lead to other things getting banned, but I don't know if people would buy that argument. So, any ideas here would be appreciated, even if it meant changing up the points a little.
Thanks,
Daniel

I would definitely spend a lot of time on how common household pets i.e. dogs and cats can be more dangerous than a snake. From there I would extrapolate and try and say that it is possible for other animals to be banned from private ownership and that it is all starting with snakes.
It's probably not a bad idea to end with responsible ownership, and that owning a snake responsibly is the same as owning a poodle responsibly.
I'll push American, before I'll drive foreign.
Don't argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Re: Help Spreading the Truth.
Do some research on good ol' senator nelsons claims, and what is being shown by the media, and show people the truth, try to make people understand that they cannot trust the political influinced media, explain that they are making a mountain of a mole hill...

Re: Help Spreading the Truth.
well the facts our that like 33 people a year get killed by dogs i think 100 people a year from equestrion animals but big constrictors kill one person ever 5 years and just like with anything the deaths probley could have been prevented with common sense. the goverment shouldent be allowed to just take away stuff cause it could be harmfull to us we got to be able to be responsible and punish the ones who arnt. if i want to ride a bull which i have it should be my choice to do so. they plan to help the eco system by stoping the pet trade of snakes but we wer not aloud to let them in wild in the first place so what makes me think that if unresponsible people couldent follow that law whats gonna stop them from getting illegal snakes. And how this will affect everbody is evertime the goverment gets there finger into somthing they never stop i mean the double tax standard was for ww2 only but we still have it to this this day so whats gonna stop them banning other animals. and if they keep banning snakes it will put people out of tons of jobs so now instead of 3 people per job opening it will be maybe more.
