As far as the kids being allergic to dogs, that is what allergy medicine is for, DUH!!

I am deathly allergic to rats, my daughter keeps three for pets and I feed 8 of my 12 snakes rats. I buy generic 24-hour allergy medicine at Wal-Mart for around $5.00 a bottle, it lasts me 3-4 months and keeps me symptom free. Don't let them use that as an excuse!

Now, as to your so-called mom and her boyfriend. Ask him once to help cover the vet bills, if he tells you to sod-off, and I'm sure he will, tell them both you'll be filing charges against them both with Animal Welfare for neglect and cruelty, and you'll see them in court if they continue to refuse to help. Then DO IT.

I understand about making the best of a bad situation, believe me. But that does not mean letting them use you for a doormat, which they will if they think they can. I won't bore you with details, but let me just say, there came a time in my life when I got tired of being stepped on, and when I snapped, I REALLY snapped. But you know what ? My life is 1000 times better now, and the people who treated me that way get along better with me now than they ever did before.

    I wish you the best.

Well, I am making my mom talk to him about paying her back for some of the bills. He is going in tomorrow too, so that will add on another couple hundred on to them. He's going to have to face me the next time he comes over.

He's already got my sister, and her husband bitter about this situation, see as the dog used to be there's and they trusted my mom to take care of them.

My sister would just rather not have anymore animals in the house right now, until the kids are older and almost out of the house.

Good luck to you and the dog...Hang tough because I'm guessing you got more tenacity than most...Hopefully, this will only be a short storm in your life...

Ha, thanks. Well I don't think the storm is over just yet, either way I am taking him to the vet here in a minute to see what he says. He might take the drainage tube out today but the lower part of the wound under his belly looks so gross. I'm hoping he'll help me clean it because I keep getting ALMOST bit when I do. I have to muzzle him =/

Sounds like Mom is the worst person to leave animals with. Hopefully you can find someone else to watch your pup?
Not only the boyfriend, but the mom for facilitating it.

I would simply take the amount the bill for the dogs care out of any money you give mom for staying there/help pay bills and when they say something point out that your putting money out for their animal that the boyfriend won't own up to causing.
I say if the dog doing good get hime a cookie ( as a treat ) lol give the boyfriend some rancid steaks for xmas lol

    I HATE IDIOT MOTHERS!

From what I'm getting from this post - your sister dumped her dog on your mother because her children are allergic (shame on your sister too!). Your mother works double jobs and is expected to care for a dog. Now, if I was the mother, I'm sending that dog to a rescue. For her to take the responsibility of a dog without complaint when she obviously cannot do so tells me she's a doormat.

Now, if I'm in a situation where I don't have a husband and I have to work double-shifts to care for myself and my children and their pets, I am not putting up with a stupid boyfriend to boot. Now, your mother is a doormat, so she lets her boyfriend run over her and her children because... she's a doormat.

So, this is what you do. You can't change your mother. Unfortunately, you don't get a choice of mothers either. So you're stuck with her. You know your mother is a doormat, so the best thing you can do for you and your mother is not to put her in a situation where she can be stepped on. So, that dog is either gonna be your responsibility 100% or you send him to a rescue. It is completely understandable that she didn't notice the dog's condition - if I had to work double-shifts and put up with a stupid boyfriend, you can't expect me to notice my children's dog either.

Now, I don't know what the story is about your snakes - why she got rid of them, etc. But, if you just keep in mind that your mother is a doormat and will say yes to anything even if she can't handle it, then you can pretty much avoid the situation where she gets to say yes to some responsibility that she won't be able to keep. Okay, here's an example - she promises you she won't touch your snake, but if the boyfriend ever tells her to bust that lock and throw away your snake - she's probably gonna do it. So, if I were you, I wouldn't get a snake right now. I'd wait until I'm completely out of her house and will not have to worry about asking mom to do something that she cannot handle.

Hope this makes sense. I'm a mother of 2 children. I'm scared of snakes. My children want snakes, so we got snakes. I'm learning as much as I can, passing info to my husband and children to help them take care of those snakes. But, I'm no doormat. I let them know I can't get over my phobia enough to be able to feed snakes and I tell them I refuse to feed the snakes. If my kids/husband don't feed the snakes, the snakes will die. Your mother will probably say, sure, I'll take care of the snakes and 6 months later, they're dead.

I could be totally off-base too. It's the internet. I'm only basing my response on this thread. Your mother could be Atilla the Hun's twin sister, I don't know.
