Sorry to hear about your situation and hope it all works out for you. I've had my share of vet bills regarding dogs (mine was from her getting hit by a car) but know that seeing them in that condition can take a toll on you. I've also had issues with a family members dog as well (not that your mom's bf is a member of the family but close enough) and it does cause alot of stress. My situation was a bit different as it was my youngest daughter who got bit. Hopefully you'll get your situation and health straightened out and things will get better for you. Good luck!
