    Swamp people

Well after being teased by advertisements I'm catching an episode tonight. It's all about Louisiana alligator hunting, and I gotta say I'd sure love to do this sometime. Alligators are one of the true success stories when it comes to managing wild populations.

The technique employed by the hunters on this show is more like fishing than hunting, using setlines with bait, checking on it the next day. One group makes homemade 12/0 (I think, I forget what size they quoted) treble hooks with lead weighted around the shank, and they actually SNAG big gators and hand-line them to the boat.

I think the show is stupid. They hook an alligator and shoot it with a shot gun. Thats the show... Not something I enjoy watching...

It is an interesting program. Mostly i enjoy it because it reminds me of back home as i moved to washington state after katrina. As for catching one, i'll leave it to them. I had one bask in front of my house once, and i left him to himself.

My kids were doing this when they were tweens, I went thru alot of tape back in the day, we relocated our catches though.
