    Hey guys,

Just wanted some suggestions on affordable thermostats , im on a tight budget but kinda scared of using a rheostat for safety reasons ( i.e. a fire). Any recommendations, right now im looking at the repti temp 500 r for 18 bucks

    Re: affordable thermostat?

I'm planning on getting a hydrofarm off of amazon for $28.50 since I only have one snake and I plan on keeping it that way for a while, I'm maxed out on pets. I decided on the hydrofarm because it had good reviews, while I have heard some bad stuff about the thermostat you speak of, and I really don't trust anything from zoo med or exo terra, as in, bulbs, rheostats, thermostats, etc...because those things have always broken on me, but there are both positive and negative reviews about that thermostat. Hopefully someone chimes in who has used it before.

I have rheostats and haven't had any probs, only thing with them is that you need stable room temps or you could run into probs, I also have the hydrofarm was well worth it for the price.

The Big Apple Herp BAH-1000 thermostat is the one that I bought also. I thought that was a pretty good price for what all it does.

I have two of the Hydrofarms. I like them. I also have four rheostats. I don't worry about the rheostats causing a fire. I did have one that wouldn't work properly after power outages. That's what led me to get my first t-stat.

That particular rheostat would not send power to the heat mat after a power outage. Happened twice so I got rid of it for the hydrofarm t-stat since it was my boas cage.

    Re: affordable thermostat?

All I have to say is: you get what you pay for.

In my eyes, there is no such thing as an affordable thermostat. Thermostats are expensive because they need to be to work properly. A $20 thermostat is better than no thermostat, but I'm just not willing to take that risk.
