    bugs in food.

so i got to the bottom of the bin today when i was filling the rats food, and i noticed little bugs crawling around the food at the bottom. they kinda looked like little beetles.

has anybody experienced this, and if so will they cause any health issues in my rats, and how the hell do you get rid of them?(besides cleaning out the bin that is)

thank you guys in advance! and gals!!!!!

They are probably bran bugs also know as flour beetles. You can get them in cereal, pasta, any types of grain. Best way to get rid of them is to clean the container and freeze the food for 3 to 4 days to kill them.

They are some type of beetle. I get literally hundreds of them in my rodent building usually underneath spare 2 x 4 that I have against he wall. They aren't bran beetles or wood beetles. They are more like a scavenger and will eat anything including dead animals. To keep them out of my rat food, I keep it stored inside a 55gal trash can with lid.

I wish I knew what type of beetles they are but they can be annoying lol. If you do drop any feed on the floor be sure to get it up otherwise they will have a feast, they eat anything. I had a rat get loose in my building before and caught it in a rat trap the next day and they devoured the rat just that fast. Good luck and let me know if you need anything.
