How would you make "X" het ''Y"?

I've been seeing quite a few posts lately involving visual recessives being het for other recessives. Example: On a thread about snows, somebody said the easiest way to produce them was to breed an Albino het axanthic to Axanthic het albino.

My question is, how would you produce a visual recessive het for another recessive?

If you breed an Albino to a Axanthic then any Albinos from that clutch would be Albino het Axanthic and any Axanthics would be Axanthic het Albino!

Exactly like seeya said. Its the same as making other hets basically. You breed a visual to another recessive visual and get the hets. Hope this helps!

for example if you breed a visual X het Y with visual Y het X you can obtain only XY, DH XY, X het Y and Y het X.
in that case all the visuals are het for the other recessive trait.

If You breed an Albino and Axanthic You will produce 100% Double Het Snows…

In order to produce a Homo that is also 100% het for another gene You have to breed a Double Homo…For example…

Snow x 100% DH Snow will produce Snows, Axanthic 100% Het Albinos, Albino 100% Het Axanthics and 100% DH Snows.

Snow x 100% Het Albino will produce Albino 100% Het Axanthics and 100% DH Snows.

Another way to make a homozygous recessive heterozygous another recessive would be to breed the double homozygous animal to one of the visual (or heterozygous) recessives.

For example, a snow bred to an albino will produce all albinos that are heterozygous snow. Additionally, snow bred to albino het axanthic will produce on average 50% snows and 50% albinos het axanthic. Or, you could breed snow to het albino, and any albinos you get would also be het axanthic.

Now hold on a sec, if you bred visual Albino to visual Axanthic, you'd get all VISUAL normals that were het for albino and axanthic wouldn't you ?

So, taking the long way round, by breeding a visual Albino to a visual Axanthic you'd get double het babies that all look normal. BUT by then breeding two of those babies together, you'd get mostly normals that are 66% double hets, some albinos that were 66% het axanthic, some axanthic that were 66% chance het albino, and an awesome 1 in 16 chance of producing a snow. Those are long odds, no wonder they are expensive!

    1/4 snow

Now I am going to work backwards because it is shorter. Once you have produced a snow you can breed it to an albino or het albino and you will get a visual albino het for axanthic.

You can also breed it to an axanthic or het axanthic and get axanthics het for albino.

    Hope that helps.
