My problem is the shipping. It's almost as much as both the hides I need. Is there anywhere that has a lower shipping rate? (or somewhere based in California, maybe?)

Possibly Petland, Monster Pets, Petco, or Petsmart? I'm sure there is at least one pet store near you that carries reptile supplies.

LLL (http://lllreptile.com/) isn't far from you, so shipping would be pretty cheap - or you could just make a trip out there yourself.
