    Albino Pied ?

My wife wants one bad no matter how long it takes.

So let me see if i have this right

Step 1 Pied x Albino = Albino het pied

Step 2 Females x Father or Male Hets to female pied
Should result in having a shot at an Albino Pied.

    Or am i wrong?

albino x pied = normal looking offspring 100% het for albino and pied

Breed 100% het albino and pied offspring together for a 1/16 chance (i believe) to hit the double recessive. You can also produce normals 66% possible het for pied and albino, albinos 66% possible het pied, and pieds 66% possible het albino.

Pied to Albino = all babies will be 100% Double het. Then breed siblings together. I'm not sure of the odds, but it's a pretty tough one to hit.

1/16 of hitting it. if you have 1.3 double hets you should be able to get one !

Just remember, that sometimes you may hatch out 4.0 double Hets, or 3.1 even. If you did get 1.3, remember that every female will not lay eggs at a young age (some may take up to 5 years old to lay a first clutch). Then remember that each one could give you 2 eggs/2 infertiles/2 slugs. Then it would take almost 3 years woth of eggs to get 16 eggs, and theoretically you could get 1 Albino Pied. The reason you don't see many Double Homozygous recessives is that it is not easy to hit the goal.

I am not trying to deter anyone from trying to make there own Double recessive, but it isn't as easy as the punnett squares make it sound. Heck, I am on my second clutch of trying to make a True Ghost with Double Hets, and I produced some Double Het Axanthic Pieds last year. I just no, that you have to keep your hopes lower on these long shots.

    Good luck to you,

Does anyone know if Riverside Reptile Breeders are reputable? They've got some nice prices on double pos hets right now. (search for "riverside" on kingsnake to see the ad.)

    Re: Albino Pied ?

Haven't heard of the seller, but you should also remember that with possible hets, the snake might not carry either gene, or only carry one of the needed genes. So you could raise a female for up to 3+ years to get her big enough to breed, and then have to breed her a few times, before you're certain that she doesn't actually carry the gene. Because even if she does have the gene, you could miss on getting a visible hatchling(albino OR pied) because of bad odds, so you'd have to breed several times to find out your possible hets are either normals, or only carry one of the genes each. So you could have a het albino x het pied.. and only get babies that look normal but could be carrying either albino or pied or both.

It's a long project, and I wouldn't want you to get started, then discover later that it might take several years to find out you don't have the makings of the double morph you wanted.

Getting a albino and a pied would at least mean you would know the babies all carry the gene from mom and dad. So all hets, no poss hets. It's pricier, but more of a sure thing.

Good luck! It's such fun anticipating the hatchlings.

I want to eventually make Spinner Snows and I'm taking a short cut by acquiring a Snow just so I already have the visual double recessive to make it a HECK of a lot easier. I'm also going to work in the Albino Piebald and Lavender Albino Piebald (Dreamsicle) project...but I love me some double recessives. I also intend to work on the "Moonglow" Ball (Hypo x Albino x Axanthic). Triple Het x Triple Het is a 1:64 chance! If I make 1 before I'm 40 I'll be doing pretty good. (I'm 23 right now)

Sure, but they also have 100% het albinos, 50% het pieds. And they had some albino pos het pieds, and some pied pos het albinos... though I think they've only got males left there. Anyway, I'd be happy to buy two or three of those, especially if they had pied markers--and at those prices, it's possible to buy more than one.

But everything you said is still true. 100% double hets are worth their weight.
