    Red Tail Boas are not nearly as shy as BP's are. They don't necessarily require snug hides to feel secure. They do like to perch, so they will spend a fair amount of time hanging out on top of the hides and if you add a piece of wood or small branch, they will hang out on those as well, even during the day, they will sleep on them. They will use their hides whenever they want to. One of mine only goes in his hides immediately after eating and when he is getting ready to shed. The rest of the time he is either on top of his hide or on his branch...

    As for feeding, make sure you are using tongs to make the f/t wiggle. I can't speak for all RTB's, but mine wont eat if I just lay the prey in the enclosure. They seem more responsive to motion and as soon as I get the prey in the tub and start the zombie dance, they are on it...
