Most p&s are not good at exposing the flash properly. Basically, the flash is too powerful or to close to the subject making an overexposed photo.
I didn't mean to call you out but I see this "don’t use flash" thing all the time. Most professional photographers know the quality of light flashes can produce is amazing or we wouldn't use them.

My boy had that ghostly look from the time I got him at 75 grams, but he has gotten more ghost like and lighter as he grows.
November when he hadn't eat yet.

Now at 500 grams

most people own p&s cameras. I know next to nothing about taking photo, but no flash is the only way i can get my pictures to look like my animals. I would assume someone taking pictures like his also owns a p&s camera

Re: Fire?
Mine is not a P&S, but I do get decent results by using the flash, and zooming in a bit from farther away. Good to have a tripod when doing this, as it can get shakey.. That way the light wont be as harsh. it also helps to have them on a solid color surface that takes up the whole picture. That way the camera doesnt have to think as much. This works for me YMMV.
