No it’s not illegal to own a pit or a ball python in Texas, however you will have a difficult time finding an apartment or a house to rent because most apartments won’t allow snakes and insurance company's hate pits unfortunately.

Re: san antonio Texas?
I'd look up apartments online. When you call just ask if they have any pet restrictions. I wouldn't volunteer what you have, because some places don't have restrictions, and if it isn't in the contract it doesn't break the rules.
Several places in S.A only allow dogs under 25lbs to exclude pits and dobies, or they say small animals only. Just do your homework.
Also talk to people to see what sides of town they'd recommend, and keep in mind where you will be working. I grew up on the NE-side, but it's getting a little run down. I haven't lived there in eight years, when I go back to visit, I notice graffiti and that the neighborhoods look old, not really dirty yet, but not taken care of. Faded paint, etc, like it might be a bad place to live in a few years.
The North and Northwest side however I hear good things about. Medical Center is also a nice area, but the traffic is horrible. I'd want to stick to stuff around or outside loop 1604 because while the traffic gets bad, it isn't necessarily bumper to bumper with 4 lanes of highway to negotiate.
Polly's Petshop is one of my favorite stores in S.A. located off a pat booker rd. Now I haven't been there since I got snakes, so I don't know how they are with their herps, but they are pretty good with all other animals they have. I've bought lots of animals from them over the years (all warm blooded), and they occasionally buy my baby bunnies (but only if I've spent time with them). If I don't spend time with a litter and they are "shy" polly's won't buy them. They only want well adjusted pets, so that people will keep and continue to care for them. At least that's the impression I get. I buy my salt water fish from Polly's, or Darby's in New Braunfels.

I live i san antonio and I have a red nose pit and 5 ball pythons and 2 boas and I live in a decent house and the people we're renting the house from have no problem with it. And i've never heard of ball pythons being a problem here at all.
1.0 jungle ball python
0.2 ball pythons
1.1 red tail boa
0.1 red nose pit
