I think they could very well be a buried gene for heat pits in a different spot. Carpets and green tree pythons have them on their back bottom lips as well as their front upper lips:
I also think you should folks should combine your slightly mutated snakes and see if you can get real heat pits. AND THEN WRITE IT UP FOR SCIENCE.
My boy is about 300 grams, he's a mid 09. I've noticed all of my ball pythons have heat pits on their lower lips at the corner of their mouths. Do all of them have that typically? I wonder if it's genetic as well, pretty cool
