It isnt really about what material they are made out of, or how thick they are. This is about the redges in the botom. These ridges make it easier for them to get their teeth started into the plastic. I personally don't think I would buy them, without preparing to fabricate something to the bottom. (Freakie_frog, do you have any issues with cleaning the tubs with the extra stuff in the bottom?) I use the simple mortar tubs from Menards. They have no ridges. I have still had a chew out. The mom chewed, and the baby got out.... since she has gone, there have been no more problems.

you are correct, it is about their shape.

the lowe's MacCourt units are thinner and large than the Hoem depot units. I prefer the Home depot units because they will not dent over time.

wow since you are so intelligent then you will fully understand that polyesters do not gain their linear strength via thickness, they gain it through orientation of their fibers. Linear strength is not what resists chewing. Not allowing a rats to chew, prevents chewing. It has been recorded that rats can chew through MANY metals much thicker, stronger and harder than any of these tubs. So in your super intelligent observation, none of these tubs will work.

To be honest I didn't want this to turn into a pissing match. Thanks for the comments. I bought these due to their price and the fact that the mortar tubs at home depot and lowes both have the new hanging hole in the sloped end. I figured that this would allow easy access for chewing and create an easier route than the ridges in the bottom. I can fab something up to block the bottom but any time you fill a hole they will just find a spot and rechew the hole out. Thanks again for all the input.

I will tell you that we have whole racks that never get chewed..then we have whole tubs of rats that make it their mission to chew out...the rats have as much to do with it as the tub.. Best of luck..with a little alteration they should work great

easy solution to that is to buy a roll of "metal hanger" from the hardware store and make a patch. Ask for it in the plumbing section.

Never seen the "hanging hole" in the ones sold at Lowe's. They are made by different companies.

i too get my tubs from lowes. 26x20 or something to that effect, no holes in them

I use and prefer Home Depot tubs.
I haven't had a chew out by regular rats because mine don't chew.
But that hole in the front makes it chewable.

The way around that is a sideways rack where the hole is on the end covered by wood so it isn't reachable by teeth.

Touche....Someones done there homework I see. All I'm trying to say is I've been using these tubs and they work great. You simply stated they were garbage so I simply stated they were made of the same material as the ones you mentioned. I've never used the ones from home depot because they are a little too big for my closet in my apartment but but I've heard good things about them.

It all comes down to whether or not your rats will chew the tubs. I kill every chewer. It is genetic. I don't care what anyone says. If they have plenty of food and water and they're not overcrowded and they start chewing they are dead for me.
