I am no troll though, and I don't even see how that was a troll response. Last time I checked, trolls didn't contribute monetarily to websites which they trolled.
I believe he was talking about the OP, jfreels.

As for taking a snake to the park, I don't think it's a wonderful idea. Stress from being exposed and phobic people aside, it's also been awfully hot lately. I wouldn't want to risk it even if there was a chance it could enjoy being out at the park.

My mistake. I should have figured when he didn't quote me. Sorry for the confusion, wilomn.

The python ban in Florida (where I live) didn't become law because people thought snakes are cool in parks. We had a good debate going with lots of support from the reptile community but the ban went up anyway - because some people were vocal about banning them and a majority of people didn't care enough to make their opinions known while a very small minority tried to stop it. I will guarantee you that Bill Nelson will run for his Federal Senate seat without even a smidgen of this reptile ban endangering his campaign.

We show off our snakes for educational purposes but we do it through people coming to visit us in our homes or having a show-and-tell at my kids' classroom (pre-arranged with the teacher, etc.) or show-and-tell at the Boy Scout Patrol meeting (to get their reptile badges) or as an exotic exhibit at the church's Halloween Party (Mike Cavanaugh brought a very nice display - like the ones at the reptile expo - with all his awesome snakes, like 40 of them - to my church!).

The thing is - people go there expecting to see snakes so it's good experience all around.

If you notice, snake-phobic people who go to zoos don't mind seeing snakes there. That's because they expect to see them there. Therefore, it is a positive educational experience because their minds are open.

This is not the same as an education from some dude with a python at the park. The curious ones get a good education - they will be the ones who wouldn't have a problem with it in the first place. The phobic ones will just get more phobic and.... vote yes on legislation when it hits the senate floor.

    Responsible education. That's the key.

The church doesn't "celebrate" Halloween per se. The church has "activities" to encourage fellowshipping (so you can get to know the people who go to the church). Also a way to get to know people in the community (you don't have to be affiliated with the church to go - it's open to anybody).

It's on the same vein as the July 4th party and the Memorial day party and the Thanksgiving party and the End of School party, etc. etc. Lots of parties at my church.

But, as an aside - Halloween is not satanic. November 1 is All Saints Day - celebrating the lives of all saints. November 2 is All Soul's Day - celebrating the lives of all who have died. It just somehow morphed into this graveyard horror stuff.

Halloween parties at my church are nothing more than a costume ball (no masks and only G-rated costumes - like Disney Princesses and such) with carnival games and free food. Perfect place to have a Reptile Exhibit with all the kids loving that stuff and parents being more indulgent than usual.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

The point is, why take an animal anywhere where it will most likely be stressed out. That alone should be enough of a reason not to take it to the park.

On top of that, if it bites or strikes just one time, the negative attention it will bring will be huge. I would say that 80-90% of people are afraid of snakes and will NOT enjoy seeing one there. We BP.net people are the minority. I don't think that BP's or even any other snakes need to be brought out in public.......all it takes is that one person who will freak out, write a senator, call the police, or whatever to give more ammo for the ban.

It would be best for the snake, community, and public to leave your BP at home where he belongs.

Take it to the park. If people want to make a big deal over nothing then let them. Just make sure you use the no touching rule. Let people see it but nobody touch. It's not right to give in to the ignorance in the world because people act like someone took a dump in there cereal bowl the site of a not so typical pet. It's your pet and you have every right as anyone with a dog, cat, bird, or whatever to go out and do the same.

The point is it will stress the snake out. I personally don't care if people know I own snakes but I would never do anything to stress my snakes out. I just don't se the point. I'm with wilomn shave your head and get a tatoo of your ass!
