So what are we to do if we own boas? Has this been passed yet?

Re: what 9 snakes are being put on the ban list?

It has NOT been passed yet. If you have NOT put in your comment yet, go to USARK's website for instructions on how to do so.
Everyone needs to speak up, because we're not going to have many more chances to do so, if any.

IF PASSED, these species will be added to the Lacey Act's list of injurious wildlife species.

    What this means:
You will NOT be able to transport these species across State lines. Permits to do so will be granted only for educational and scientific purposes (pet owners are SOL).
Obviously, if you cannot transport them across State lines, that means you cannot ship them, or sell them, or buy them, across State lines.
You can still keep them, and you can still breed them, and sell them locally.

Re: what 9 snakes are being put on the ban list?

It makes no sense of why they would make a bill where you can still own, breed and sell locally...I'm pretty damned sure there is at least one snake breeder in every state, and a lot of them will look into getting some of these pythons to breed before this law passes...it's rediculous...and it ticks me off...this would also mean no more reptile expos right? Because how would breeders get to a show in a different state?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the part about transporting them is because they are worried people are taking them to Florida and other areas in the south to be released into the wild.

Which is a bunch of crap. It's a shame that one or two retics and balls got out a long time ago in Miami and people FREAKED out. I believe when they opened "hunting season" for pythons in the everglades, they only killed 3??? At least that's what I heard the number was. They actually don't do well in the everglades because the gators are there.

Re: what 9 snakes are being put on the ban list?

Actually, it's looking increasingly like Burms are adapting to the Everglades, and they may be around for some time to come. They're inserting themselves into the food chain as meso-predators, feeding on raccoons, rabbits, rats, opossums, some birds and small alligators, and similar-sized prey. They're being eaten by a variety of predators (including birds and snakes) when young, and by alligators when larger.
Large Burmese are proving to be ill adapted to the Everglades environment, so we can expect to see the smaller individuals being naturally selected for over time. Smaller Burmese have shown that they can more easily handle the weather and survive.
I find it vanishingly unlikely that they can be eradicated at this point. But this Lacey Act proposal will have exactly 0 impact on that issue, and Burms cannot live anywhere else in the US. Well, they could probably survive on Hawaii, but Hawaii already prohibits importation of most every animal.
