    I don't put the food in the cage at all. They waste too much of it that way. If you can figure out a way to keep the food in a 'netting' of sorts that's the best option. I made food cages out of 1/2 inch hardwired cloth that I can pour food into, but they can't get into. My nursing tubs have hardwired cloth as a lid so I don't have to worry about making a food cage for them. Also, make sure you don't just set the food cage on the floor, it needs to hang in a way they can't crawl on top and pee on everything.
