Super Dwarfs, A question

My husband likes the look of a retic, but I'm worried about not being able to handle such a large snake. I mean, I can handle my little boa girl no problem when she's being feisty, but what about a retic. Are super dwarfs any easier to handle than a regular retic. I've heard these stay relatively small (9-12ft) with some getting bigger but only by a little. Would this be a good choice for us? And where can we find them? I checked the links in another thread but none of those were advertising supers.

I guess some general information and hearing the experience of others would be nice.

And I guess, what is having a regular retic like? I want to get some hands on experience before I jump into larger snakes, but I guess I'm just fishing for information on them. To get an idea.

there are a few different localities of 'dwarf' retics. These guys area considered dwarves, but are still capable of becoming GIANT.. 16 foot monsters instead of 25 foot monsters.

SUPER dwarves however are a different story. They're pretty small, and if you're comfortable with BCIs or carpet pythons you'd be more than comfortable with a SD 'tic.

Just stay with a pure SD, not one that has been crossed with larger localities and morphs.

I've only ever handled one older SD 'tic that was 3 or 4 years old, seemed to weigh just 3-6 pounds or so.

Yeah, Super dwarfs are TINY imo. Mine is an 07 and hasn't even hit 1000 grams. Even the adults are a bit of a push over. They max out at about 6-8 feet.

Where could I find one? How much do they usually go for? If they stay that small, I am definitely interested in one. That is of course, if I don't have to sell a kidney and my left arm to get one.

There are a bunch on adds on kingsnake for SD's. Babies, juvies and sometimes adults.

I had an adult male who was around the 5 foot mark. They can tend to be nippy and pretty active or flighty. Mine was nippy at times and tagged me good a couple of times, but a 5 foot retic is tiny. They are so slender that even at 10 foot they wouldnt be that bad.

Before deciding may I suggest looking into the other large pythons? Because there are some really stunning animals that are fairly small and may peak your interest. For instance the Moluccans.

Be careful where you buy them from...Like someone posted earlier many are called SD, but have been bred in with mainlands and will still get rather large. They can also be nippy and flighty. Some have very tame ones, I have 2 like that. But I have also had a handful that would nip and draw blood routinely or if not that musk and I'd rather get bitten than stunk upon...LOL

This could be wise too, to make sure you get what your husband wants...Depending on your max size, SD's or Dwarfs can be an option...My Dwarf Tics are right now at around 9' and all the looks of a mainland in a compact size...Not even as nippy or flighty as SD's...But beware of the G-Stripes, they tend to have a wild streak in them...I got bit last night on my elbow from a het G-Stripe girl...But I love them!!!

Also, possibly look at the Bredli's...They are in the Morelia species and get to around 9' I think and are puppy dog tame with a great feeding response. I'm getting a 1.1 pair and can't wait for them to arrive...All the size of my Dwarfs, but much mellower...

True SDs only get 6-8 foot.

There are many many local dwarfs.
Some of which can stay under the 10 foot mark
and some of which can reach up to 16 feet.


I highly recommend doing tons and tons of research, and buy from a reputable breeder, because many people have purchased SD retics, or Dwarf retics, just to learn in a few months it isnt.
