It's not cruel. Snakes will eat live in the wild, and I know that captive ball pythons aren't the only ones who will probably miss a few times, too. I'm sure the original poster did not mean any harm, and did not mean to hurt the rat. And I know of a few baby ball pythons who are horrible at their first few feedings, too. It's not cruelty.

I can't say the same. My ball python is afraid of live, and refuses everything except frozen/thawed, so even though I am "taking away" his instinct, he is feeding well, and not afraid of his food.

I think everyone has a right to feed what they want, and everyone has their own opinion for that. But to say that one way is wrong or cruel isn't true at all.
Though, I would be a bit afraid of that snake if I were you.
