It is true, people just can't seem to fathom that it's even possible for us to feel something for these "monsters" so to them making comments like that don't even register as being rude.
It's like someone said earlier, what if one of us were to walk up to someone and say "Gross, your kids are ugly and disgusting, why would you even have something so horrible." I'm sure we'd be liable to be punched in the face if we said something like that
