    Anybody ever try melatonin?

I'm considering it as a sleep aid....I've seen it at the store, and did some research on it, but before i go out and spend the money on it, I'd like to hear from some people who actuallly have taken it, so I know if its worked or not.

    Re: Anybody ever try melatonin?

i have used it before, and it does make me drowsy within a half an hour of taking it. I had a long day today, so crashing is coming easy, but yea, if you have trouble sleeping, it really does help.

I have trouble going to sleep when I am really tired, don't make sence I know, but it makes me sleepy within 30 minutes, I get a good night's sleep and not drousy in the morning. I think it is all natural too. I recommend it.

    Re: Anybody ever try melatonin?

I've had severe insomnia my entire life and it did absolute NOTHING for me at all. Very few people actually accomplish feeling more tired and getting to sleep easier using it, as it usually seems to be best to keep those asleep through the night that are able to get to sleep ok in the first place. I haven't seen many people actually have the same type of reaction of feeling really drowsy and falling right to sleep using melatonin the way they would if they were to use some of the other sleep aids out there. And truthfully I think most people that do feel really drowsy taking it are having the placebo effect kind of reaction, they know it's a sleeping pill so their mind tells them they should be tired after taking it. A lot of people don't really understand just how effective that placebo mindset can be. (actually watched someone mistake a bottle of asprin for sleeping pills one night and still pass out just as quick and act all drowsy beforehand, so yes it really can be that effective just believing something is supposed to make you feel a certain way) But like I said, it really seems to be best to just keep people asleep that tend to wake up a lot throughout the night, not actually put them to sleep in the first place. For me unfortunately it even failed miserably with that part of it.
Of course everyone is different so it may work the way it is supposed to for you and may be worth a shot. Just buy a cheap small generic brand bottle rather than the expensive crap(since it's still the same thing), and try it out.
But if your problem is actually getting to sleep in the first place, that is not what melatonin is for and it will likely not help you there at all.

I've personally been prescribed every sleep med out there and have not found one that works, or doesn't cause bad enough side effects to actually make my lack of sleep worse. The only thing I've managed to do is take the generic allergy/sleep meds, which usually contain diphenhydramine hci, and that can usually make me drowsy enough to fall asleep even with my anxiety issues. Again generic brands are always cheapest and do the same thing as the name brands.
But not knowing your tolerance for medication and reactions to it, even the allergy/sleep med can stop working if you take it every night for extended periods of time. I can't manage to take it for more than a month, sometimes less, before it stops working altogether for me and I have to detox for a couple months before it will work again. But then again, most people don't have the ridiculous tolerance level for medications that I do.

Sadly most of the time you really won't have any idea until you try it for yourself because everyone reacts differently, sometimes very differently.

I know this is going to sound goofy, but drinking a glass of warm milk will help you fall asleep. There is medical backing to this finding. It will release tryptophan.

    Just a thought.

    Re: Anybody ever try melatonin?

I take it for occasional insomnia, and it definitely does make you drowsy in 20-30 minutes and did aid in falling asleep.

However, for me (and a couple friends I know who have tried it) it gave me vivid dreams/nightmares and I am usually groggy the next day.

    Hey

I am 17 and I have the worst case of insomnia that my doctor has ever seen (hes been a doctor for 30 years, so its pretty bad lol!)

I tried melatonin for 2 months. more than enough time for it to do anything good and it didnt help me AT ALL.

Even now I am on a tranq drug that is supose to knock you out, and it doesnt even make me sleepy

So with that in mind, Im sure melatonin will work for you, I just think if you have bad sleep problems, then it most likely wont help

    Re: Anybody ever try melatonin?

I have tried melatonin and it did not work for me. But that does not say much because i have a very high tolerance for medication. I have been prescribed sleeping aids that did not help. Heck I was on such a high dose of one med that it would have knocked out a horse. But that is just me. Everyone reacts different. Give it a shot see if it works.

Have you ever tried the muscle relaxing technique while you are lying in bed? It does not work for me. My brain just will not stop running. I know many people that have tried it and it worked great for them. There are videos on you tube that explain how to do it. There is one Indian guy in-particular that everyone says is very good. His name I can't recall at the moment. If you can't find him send me a pm and I will get it for you.

    Re: Anybody ever try melatonin?

It works great. I used it while camping and at home when I needed to get my sleep schedule back on track. Just don't take to much or you will be wide awake. 1-2 pills should do the job.
