I have tried melatonin and it did not work for me. But that does not say much because i have a very high tolerance for medication. I have been prescribed sleeping aids that did not help. Heck I was on such a high dose of one med that it would have knocked out a horse. But that is just me. Everyone reacts different. Give it a shot see if it works.
Have you ever tried the muscle relaxing technique while you are lying in bed? It does not work for me. My brain just will not stop running. I know many people that have tried it and it worked great for them. There are videos on you tube that explain how to do it. There is one Indian guy in-particular that everyone says is very good. His name I can't recall at the moment. If you can't find him send me a pm and I will get it for you.
