    I wouldn't say I am the most experienced but I find mine are always knocking their dishes over and getting their substrate (paper towels) wet, this is solved with a heavier water bowl...but mine soak every once in a while a couple inches is more than enough for the water will rise with them being in the dish and they don't need to be completely submerged. The water dishes are basically there to drink from so I generally put very little water in the dish.
