Were you looking high end? low end? doesn't matter? Any idea what it's going to be used for? Is it a camera for just every day use, or will it be specifically for her class and taking stills?

I picked up the Nikon L110 as a mid-level camera. I have been VERY happy with it.

what is she looking to do with the camera? Because you dont want a digital point and shoot if she needs a manual film.

    Good point!
My first two photography classes were pure 35mm B&W!

Any info on the photography class? If she's going to be getting somewhat serious about it, maybe a DSLR. They're very powerful and flexible and give you a lot more room to grow than a P&S.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you could pick up a used Nikon D40 or a new D3000 for a decent price.

Again, really depends on what she's using it for and how serious she'll be about it.
