Last year, I discovered that, much to my amusement, the best way to catch catfish out of the local lakes was to throw out a big old grasshopper on an overcast day.
I think they were wise to the usual baits, but since no one was using grasshoppers, but there were grasshoppers all over the banks, they hit it before it touched the bottom. ^_^
The only downside to that is that the grasshoppers would be exited by these horrifying horsehair worm parasites when they hit the water, and that's something both fascinating and remarkably repellent, lol.
By the way, freshwater drum are DELICIOUS eating, so long as you eat them the same day you catch them. They taste like cod and only have a slightly firmer texture--nice and flaky. I understand that does NOT apply to drum from the Great Lakes, though, for some reason those have a nasty flavor. The ones around here are fantastic.
