    Unsuccessful popping?

So, I aquired a new snake a few days ago (free on craigslist), and it has never been sexed. After watching several videos on youtube I decided to try to pop it to determine the sex.

It seems as though they make it look much simpler on the videos than it really is. I tried popping my male first. I figured that would be a good place to start to determine if I was doing it right (I got him from a very reputable breeder, so I am guessing he is sexed correctly). I tried several times, and as far as I can tell he is a female. I'm sure I am just doing it wrong, because white stuff came out (I'm guessing it is sperm? That is what Ralph Davis had happen with one of his males in his video).

So, does the "white stuff" only come out of the males, or could there be some fliuds that would come out when you pop a female as well??

Don't flame me -- I know about the birds and the bees ...just want to know if I am popping incorrectly or if I my snake was sexed wrong by the breeder.

    Thanks!!!

Oh, and BTW -- when I popped the new snake, I didn't see any hemipenes either.

    Re: Unsuccessful popping?

It is much harder to pop larger snakes, I had a hard time popping my new piebald male I bought from Rusty's-balls and he is only 500 grams. The bigger they get, the more control they have at holding it in. After trying many, many, many times, I finally got one of his penes out. No matter how reputable the breeder, mistakes can happen, which is why I always double check my snakes.

well the fluid and white stuff are urates and urine. Popping on larger snakes is more difficult. You should have them probed. Also it can be dangerous to probe or pop if you aren't sure what your doing.

    Re: Unsuccessful popping?

i watched ralph's videos and a few others on poopping but i dont feel comfortable doing it with that much pressure(they are both about 700g)
u need to be careful doing it cuz u can damage their "goodies" if u do it wrong. just have ur vet probe, or if u know someone have them probe or pop but make sure they know what they r doing

    Re: Unsuccessful popping?

I would say it's still possible that it's a male, because you're new to it and popping can be really difficult with larger snakes. Justin Kobylka just came out with a video about popping that I thought was better than most of the others out there, you might want to give that a watch. You could also try probing. Probing kits are pretty inexpensive and if you plan to breed, it might be well worth the investment. If you're still not sure, you could have a herp vet check him/her out and it probably shouldn't run you more than $35 bucks, although it wouldn't hurt to get a quote first. Good luck :-)

(also: no, white stuff doesn't only come out of males. That could be any number of things.)
