My Cali is always "exploring," roaming the tank constantly until late evening. They like to check things out - and look for ways out. Sometimes she'll just lay on the aspen, or on one of her hides, but the only time she's really inactive (curled up inside the cool-side hide) is when her eyes go opaque, and then she sheds in a few days.
When she looks a little jumpy - i.e., she starts tracking any movement near the tank in an anxious kinda way - it means she's hungry. I already know her feeding habits, though, so I always have a mouse at the ready for her.
She's about two years old now, and right around 4 feet long if that helps you any.
