backing up a black pastel with a het pied

    Hi,

Next season I'm planning to breed my big 2008 pied girl to my black pastel male. I'm psyched about that pairing! But I was assuming my (poor, desperate, lovesick, starving) het pied male wouldn't be getting any action. Because you can't back up a dominant morph with a recessive--because you can't tell paternity, so you can't even claim that the normals are 50% hets....

But! It just occurred to me that that rule doesn't apply if the -MOM- is a visual recessive! All of her babies are 100% het pied, regardless of the father...

So I think I can back up the black pastel boy with the het pied boy after all? So any resulting black pastels het pieds will certainly be from the black pastel, and any visual pieds will certainly be from the het pied, and the rest, who knows! But their mom was a pied, so they're all 100% hets.

Is this right? Or am I missing something?

    You're correct.

If your female was a het, then that would be a problem. You would need to breed a visual recessive male to her or the super form of a codom male to her to be 100% sure of the genetics of the offspring.

    Good luck with them.

Could she produce offspring from both males in the same clutch?

Yah. A lot of breeders like to play "codom roulette" with their normal females. And occasionally you do see clear examples of mixed-paternity clutches.

Here's a great example. Last year I bred a pied, lesser, bumble bee and pewter to a pied female. Three males fathered this clutch...
