Finally!

My big normal female Aspen took her first meal since the middle of October of last year.

I'm a huge advocate of "they'll tell me when they want to eat" and its never let me down. Last feeding day she had the "i'm interested" look, but today she was doing her usual hovering right near the front of the tub. Im so happy to see her back on food. I think shes one of those females who just doesn't eat for a vast majority of the year. But she'll be 4 and I'm planning on breeding her this year (to my cinnamon male, i think they'd make the MOST beautiful babies).

My two new solomon islands also ate for me. its been a good day.. Now if i could just find that crested gecko I'd be all set. :/

congrats. i had a male that jsut ate after 5 months of no food. i was like what the heck is wrong with you??? im the same way as you though, and believe they will eat when they want to

Even though they will eat when they are ready, it's still a relief when they do...

is it the general rule that ball pythons fast like that or are they the exceptions to that rule?

Hey Cinderbird, congrats on your bp finally eating - I wish I could have some of that luck - my female bp went off feed the 2nd week of December and has not went back on yet - needless to say it is driving me nuts with worry. Luckily she hasn't lost very much weight at all though.

Your advice is to just offer each week and not to worry - correct??

I wanted to ask you - did you reframe from holding you bp while it was fasting??? I miss being able to interact with my bp - can I still hold her on occassion without adding to the problem??

I would offer her food, maybe once a month. More like every 6-8 weeks. She was my first snake and I know her habbits like the back of my hand. If shes under her hide when i do my pre-scenting routine I know shes not going to eat for me so i don't bother offering.

When shes in feeding mode she's right at the front of the cage pasing like any other snake thats going to eat, thats how i know she's ready for food.

I handled her sparringly. I would pick an animal that was feeding if i just wanted to hold someone for fun, but I'd take a peek at her and weigh her every once in a while when i felt like it, and cleaned her tub of course.

I dont think handling a snake thats naturally off feed will impact it negativly. I wouldn't handle any more than normal (" "). As long as you're 100% sure that the reason the snake is off feed is seasonal and not something like incorrect husbandry or outside stress or something.
