Juvenile males

Hi all. I just got two juveniles... ones a blizzard leo and a regular. they are both males from what i can tell... but they havent showed any sign of fighing... they cuddle up against each other and stuff....... is it certain that males will indeed fight? when they get bigger I plan to move them to their own enclosures if theres gonna be any problem.

You need to have them in seperate enclosures. The males are territorial, and as hatchling they will tolerate eachother, but soon enough they will start fighting, so i advise you to move them to seperate enclosure ASAP. Its better to be early than too late.

hwo do i know if their females.. i looked under their butt region... that horizontal groove indicates male right? the normal one has a very distinct groove, the blizzard one however doesnt but it opened up when it pooed on me haha. it might be one female one male. in which i would love hatchlings ;p

Look up "sexing leopard geckos" on google. More than one place will show pictures. In males you can see the testes at the base of the tail and there is also a difference in the ventral scales.

Males have a V shaped row of pores above their vent.



Females lack these pores but may have slightly dimpled scales in their place. Mature males will produce a waxy substance from their pores. Males also have two bulges at the tail base - the hemipenes.

Oh, and additionally:

If they are both males, they WILL fight when they mature. You do not want this to happen because they will most likely severely injure one another or worse.

Since your animals are juvenile they may not be apparently male or female yet, though it's usually easy to tell around 20 grams..

Honestly, it's better to separate them now rather then find out later. If it is male and female and the male breeds her too early you will have a whole different problem on your hands..

And I held them upside down and did an detailed comparison.. and they both appear to be FEMALE. is this bad? Are females territorial??? neither have the femoral pores, the bulge, or preanal pores...

so they are definitly two lovely ladies ;p

except its not very lady like pooping on me...

I have this infared/night vision miniature webcam hooked up inside their castle hide... its pretty cool... their always cuddling ;p

Females can be territorial and bully one another. You really have to treat it on a case by case basis. I have some females that I would never house with other animals, but on the other hand I have several that do fine together..

If you notice one getting noticibly larger (they should be of similar sizes anyway) then you should separate them. If you notice one getting thin (perhaps getting bullied for food) then you should separate them.... Or, the largest red flag of all, if you see them fighting of see bite marks/injuries, then separate them.

EDIT: And they aren't cuddling..they are vying for the best spot in the tank.. this can also lead to problems.

I feed them in a separate reptile tavern. They always get their food EQUALLY.
