Venting about a pet store
It isn't really a long story, but here we go. So I was at the mall today and there happens to be a pet store in there, They have some cool water dragons and monitors, a red tail boa and a BP. At first I was like oh this is a nice little reptile selection so I proceeded to ask an employee if I could see the ball python. Once again, like a few stores I have been to, the employee went ahead and said I can't let you see it unless you are going to buy it. How does that make any sense, she says I can't let you see it unless I am going to def purchase the animal, who purchases anything at all without looking at it first. The thing was laying under a bunch of fake leaves and whatnot, so I at least asked for some info on it. Diet, DOB, sex, etc. so the girl tells me they have no paperwork, I asked if it ate live for frozen and she goes both, so I asked both at the moment and she says well no it eats live but they can eat frozen(ovbiously if you can get them too) and they say they have no idea if it is male or female because you have to stick your finger in some hole... UUUHHHHGGGG...</End rant>

Re: Venting about a pet store
yea it truly sucks that most petstores don't take very good care of their animals but because they are a small store in the mall they don't have much of an opportunity to messed up...bit its just stupid that they said well I can't let you see it unless you are going to buy it...so basically they are saying I have to buy it first then pick it up and inspect it...wow

Since you live in near Columbus go to Captive Born Reptiles. Their place is so nasty! Their boas sit in poop and old shed.
Anyways just like the OP i went into a pet store (CBR) looked around and asked to hold one of the boas and heres how it went
Her: "Are you going to buy it"
Me: "Maybe if its healthy"
Her: "Well if you are not sure if you are going to buy it you cannot hold it"
Me: "Why would i buy a snake i cant even hold"
Her: "You can hold it after you buy it"
Me: "Yea good point. Id rather never hold a snake who is sitting in poop and old shed let alone buy it"
*walks out*
Sorry for the thread hijack DJ_Bizarre but it makes me mad to when u cannot hold a snake. Who in the world would buy a snake they cannot hold? (unless its online but then it would have to be a established breeder who is trustworthy"

I don't think I'd be able to go there without saying a few bad things...
:cens0r:
But, on a happier note, I will be going to the Columbus reptile expo this June to pick up some African Soft Furred Rats to breed and feed

Re: Venting about a pet store
I guess i got lucky... i got 4 of mine from pet stores... 3 from a family type owned store and 1 from pet supplies plus and the manager is said to be a breeder, not not posotive. i have had excellent experiance with all my snakes and all are very very healthy!!!
but i understand your rant, when i got my snow corn the girl who got it out wanted to his this ungodly huge glove and didnt know what a snow was she grabbed the normal lol. but she must of been really new cuz i never seen her.
im not allowed in pet stores because i always try to "rescue" the animal lol.

but yea isnt it totally ridic how they tell you to buy it before you get to look at it, who in their right mind who had any knowledge of the possible problems that an animal could have would buy it before they got to inspect it.
