Sexing monitors?
I am just curious, I have no intention in breeding, I would just like to know if they are male or female.
I have a Ornate Nile monitor that was very neglected when I got it, but it is about 2 1/2 to 3 ft. in length and I'm assuming about two years old.
Also, my Savannah monitor is 3ft. 7in. and three years old.
Is there any way to sex them?

Re: Sexing monitors?
Post pics which have a good shot of the tail. Might be able to tell from that.

My camera does not work with my new computer, but I'm going to get a new one soon.
I have heard that probing can do damage, is that true? I used to probe all of my ball pythons, but I wouldn't attempt it myself with the monitors. I would take them to my vet it I thought it were possible.

Do NOT attempt to probe varanids. If you have no intention on breeding, just give it a little time. By the time they are a year old you will be able to tell from the base of the tail, much larger with bulges on males.

Oh, no, I definitely would not attempt it myself. But I have heard that probing will cause damage, so I am guessing by you response that it is true. Both of my monitors are over a year, I just don't know how to tell the difference between males and females.
Thanks Chris

Re: Sexing monitors?
Alright everybody, I just found out that my Nile Monitor is a male, he finally exposed himself. The Savannah monitor is still a guessing game. I am going to try and post some pictures soon since I just got a new camera. I would appreciate everyone's opinion when I get the pictures up!
