I mostly agree with the Doc, but I will admit to having an enclosed saguaro "boot" that my snakes just love love LOVE. It's difficult to clean, too, but it's too nifty and well-loved to throw out.
I usually coax them out by carrying them, hide and all, to the kitchen table, where I can keep an eye on them while I work on my laptop or read. Curiosity almost always seems to get the better of them, and they'll usually come out and start exploring after 10 or 15 minutes. But that might not work with a snake that's really deep in shed.
